Cal-JAC Pre-Apprenticeship Academies Win Backing in State Budget

The next class of the California Firefighter Joint Apprenticeship Committee’s unique and successful pre-apprenticeship program — the Cal-JAC EMT Academy — is being recruited, thanks to a commitment from the California Legislature.

With the strong advocacy of CPF, the 2021-22 state budget provides full funding for apprenticeship programs, including funding to support Cal-JAC’s groundbreaking EMT academies, as well as the future launch of a new series of paramedic academies.

The Cal-JAC EMT Academy is aimed at providing a rigorous and comprehensive pathway to a career as a first responder to qualified and motivated individuals who can demonstrate financial need. The six-month program provides candidates an opportunity to earn their EMT certification, physically train for the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), receive preparatory instruction for the Cal-JAC written exam, and complete both tests as part of the course.

The entire program is tuition-free, and cadets who graduate from the academy will be added to the Firefighter Candidate Testing Center’s Statewide Eligibility List.

The 2022 Cal-JAC EMT Academy will be conducted in Los Angeles. Interested candidates in the Los Angeles area have until October 1, 2021 to apply for a spot in the Cal-JAC EMT Academy. To apply and get more information, go to caljacacademy.org.
