California Rises Concert Raises Millions to Aid Fire Victims
In 2018, California experienced one of the worst wildfire seasons on record, burning nearly 900,000 acres, displacing thousands of people and claiming a record number of lives. Firefighters and first responders battled countless hours on the front lines of each fire to protect thousands of lives and communities. The California Fire Foundation, through the SAVE program, provided immediate on-site aid and distributed millions of dollars directly into the hands of victims to help purchase basic necessities. As the dust settles, those affected by the wildfires are only just beginning to pick up the pieces.
In an effort to continue to provide aid to victims of these tragedies, Governor Gavin Newsom, partnered with the Foundation to host California Rises: A Concert to Help the Victims of California Wildfires. The concert helped raise funds for the long-term recovery of impacted communities. In the wake of the tragic wildfires, Newsom explained, “it seems appropriate to use this moment to unite as a state – stronger and more resilient than ever – to do whatever we can to ensure all of our fellow Californians, especially those impacted by tragic wildfire, have the opportunity to build a brighter future and pursue their dreams.”
Wildfire victims, their families and donors filled the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento sharing moments of hope with special performances by Cold Weather Sons, Betty Who, X Ambassadors, Common and Pitbull. Newsom announced that the concert raised nearly $5 million dollars for wildfire relief, reminding victims that they are not alone.
“The concert was a celebration of our state’s strength and resilience during times of tragedy,” said Foundation Chair Brian K. Rice. “The outcome served as a beacon of hope, healing and renewal for all. Together, California rises.”
