CAL-JAC

Opening Doors for the Next Generation
In the 1980s, the California Firefighter Joint Apprenticeship Committee (Cal-JAC) the nation’s first joint labor-management program focused exclusively on apprenticeship training and recruitment for the fire service was established. Since then, Cal-JAC has grown into a powerhouse, now partnering with nearly 200 fire departments and creating vital pathways for those exploring a future in the profession.
One of its signature events, the Cal-JAC Firefighter Career Expo, has served as a cornerstone of statewide recruitment for nearly two decades. Held this Spring at FCTC Sacramento, the latest Expo broke attendance records and underscored the strength of a collective and innovative approach to recruitment.
"This Career Expo welcomed more departments, more candidates, and the highest percentage of women candidates we have ever seen,” said Cal-JAC Executive Director Yvonne de la Peña. “We’re proud to support meaningful connections between the fire departments and future firefighters.”
The event drew 583 candidates, who met with representatives from 30 fire departments. Departments came prepared — with multiple recruiters, recruitment materials, and live demonstrations—ready to showcase what it means to serve. Among the candidates, 20% identified as women , and 64% identified as an ethnic/racial group that is currently underrepresented in the fire service.
True to Cal-JAC's family-friendly approach, the Career Expo welcomed not just candidates but also their families and friends. With activities for kids and lunch provided, over 1,300 people moved through a vibrant mix of booths, gear displays, and career-building conversations and presentations.
"We're always looking ahead,” said FCTC Program Director Jeanette Plascencia. “Our goal is to continue identifying ways to reduce recruitment barriers for both departments and candidates.”
The next Firefighter Career Expo will be held September 6, 2025, at FCTC South El Monte. If you know someone considering a career in the fire service, encourage them to attend and take that next step.
