To Be Remembered…Always
Memorial Expansion Project
The California Firefighters Memorial is more than just a physical space on the grounds of the Capitol. It is a symbol of heroism and remembrance. Perhaps the most meaningful symbol of all is the one that sits at the center of that physical space: the Memorial Wall.
“Every time I come to the Memorial, it is a powerful reminder of what it means to our profession,” said CPF President-Emeritus Dan Terry. “I also see what it means for their families to have this tribute.”
While every year brings the hope that no firefighter will die in the line of duty, the reality is sobering. The California Firefighters Memorial now bears the names of more than 1,500 fallen firefighters – nearly twice the number inscribed when the Memorial was dedicated 20 years ago. Each year, anywhere from two to three dozen new names are added.
The meaning and symbolism of the Memorial is eternal. Not so the physical space. The Memorial Wall is running out of room.
“Every year, I see new names, different names, people I’ve known and those I’ve never met,” said Terry. “This Memorial is a place where families can see and touch their loved one’s name, feel their presence and know the meaning of their sacrifice.”
The California Fire Foundation in resolute in its commitment to ensure that fallen firefighters – past, present and future – will receive the remembrance they have earned with their lives. A place for loved ones and surviving colleagues to remember those who gave their lives to protect their fellow Californians.
Plans are being developed to expand the Memorial in order to ensure that those who fall in future years will have their names inscribed for the ages. The California Firefighters Memorial’s construction and maintenance has been, and still is, entirely funded through privately-raised funds. Most of that money comes from firefighters themselves.
As the California Fire Foundation plans to expand the current Memorial Wall, funds will once again be needed to ensure that all those lost in the line of duty will be honored in this most solemn of tributes. Firefighters have always taken care of their own. That commitment made the Memorial a reality, and will, no doubt, carry it through again.
