FCTC Puts Safety First at Testing Center Locations

New Protocols in Place to Continue Recruitment with Confidence

The Firefighter Candidate Testing Center (FCTC) has reopened its doors to continue vital Candidate Physical Ability Testing (CPAT), written tests and preparatory courses at four locations around the state. When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, businesses were forced to close their doors leaving firefighters on the front lines and thousands of candidates eager to get their fire service career started.

With continued coronavirus outbreaks and wildfire season in full swing, the recruitment process has never been more important. FCTC is considered an essential agency, and as such, remains open with strict safety protocols and reduced registration in place at the Sacramento, Livermore, South El Monte and San Diego locations.

“FCTC’s efforts are directly aligned with the governor’s orders to help slow the spread of COVID-19,” said Mitch De Anda, program director of FCTC. “These new safety guidelines are enforced to keep the health and safety of candidates, proctors and staff our utmost priority.”

All CPAT, written tests and preparatory courses now require mandatory temperature checks prior to entry, physical distancing standards, full face and hand protection for proctors and rigorous equipment sanitization protocols.

FCTC extends the California Firefighter Joint Apprenticeship Committee’s (Cal-JAC) decades of expertise to connect California fire departments with eligible candidates who are prepared for the responsibility at hand. “These men and women could be the next generation on the front lines,” said Yvonne de la Peña, executive director of the Cal-JAC. “We continue our work to ensure they’re as qualified as possible to build a stronger and better equipped fire service.”
